I'm a bit late on publicly announcing my 2011 New Year's Resolution, but I definitely had it. This new blog is part of this year's resolution to write more. I want to make sure my thoughts get down on paper and on screen.
Last year, I accomplished my goals of reading more and joining a gym. I read about 54 books in total thanks to my Nook. In addition, I also started knitting again. This year I taught myself to crochet.
I met a lot of people and learned a lot of things last year as well. A legacy is something people leave behind. I want to make sure that my words are preserved for the future or if anything should happen. Johnny bought me a beautiful journal for my birthday. Last week I had a million idea I wanted to write down. This week, of course, I can't think of a single thing to write.
So here's to another successful year of personal achievement and discovery!
Reports from the life of Kim. We'll laugh, we'll cry, we'll learn, and eventually find our place in the big crazy world.

They don't make studying easy
Today I had my first graded test in years. I think I did pretty well. I'm generally not a good test taker, but if I have enough time to prepare I usually do well understanding the material and regurgitating it onto paper. Too bad I didn't realize this technique in college or I probably would have done better. Luckily, I have a second chance to focus more on school. Surprisingly, the busier I am, the more time I allow myself to study.
They don't make it easier as you get older. I noticed I still get easily distracted like a marathon of Criminal Minds, Jurassic Park 3, Facebook games out the wazoo. There are so many distractions, you either have to learn to multi-task well or plan far in advance.
One of my classes has me take this online test. It's pretty interesting to see how you best learn: http://literacyworks.org/mi/assessment/findyourstrengths.html. Try it out! I'm musical, social, and nature.

Kindle Cover Knit
I made this as a Nook/Kindle cover for a man. All the other patterns have nice cables and such, but it’s not very manly. In addition, I could not find a button or bead to suit my needs, so I went with a tie. It took me no time at all to complete.
Yarn:
1/4 skein of Patons Classic Wool in Dark Grey Mix
Pattern:Use the Long tail cast on so you can sew up the bottom.
CO 44 on size 8 16in circlular
Knit 14 rows
(k1,p1) 20 rows
Knit 8 rows
Next row: K11, BO 2 stitches, knit rest of the row
knit 2 rows
BO
Sew bottom
Use 4 inch scrap yarn thread through from back to front on both ends. Tie both ends, you may add beads if you like. To close the cover, thread through the holes you made on top.
Puppy Cuteness
I've waited my whole life to get a puppy and it looks like it is finally happening. It's funny because it only took one attempted robbery in an upscale neighborhood to convince my parents that it's time to switch from fish to mammals.
Getting a puppy is like having a new baby. Everyone offers you advice, you get everyone's hand-me-downs, you read all the puppy books and yet nothing can actually prepare you for your arrival until it happens. I suspect there will be a few sleepless nights and lots of pee in unwanted spaces, but hopefully she will become a great new addition to our family.
Pictured here is Charger Lilypad Allen Marie or "Charger" for short. She is a female German Shepherd. Right now she's still with her mom growing up and stuff, but by next month we hope to bring her home.
I'm sure there will be many more fantastic stories to come!

Theme Park Squirrels
People come from all over the world to visit Orlando and the world-class theme parks. Nowadays anyone who travels would never think of leaving home without a camera or a cell phone that takes pictures. One would think that memories to capture would include your child meeting a character or some significant piece; however, I constantly witness tourist taking photos of theme-park squirrels.
It blows my mind because it's a normal squirrel. Prior to moving to Orlando, I've seen squirrels all over the place, they run, they eat nuts/food, they get hit by cars, etc. Tourists both foreign and domestic go bonkers for squirrels crossing the road or sitting down eating the popcorn they've thrown on the ground. I've even overheard someone say "it's amazing how they train these animals." It's a squirrel! You probably have five of these in your backyard. I see this occurrence on a daily basis and will get a photo next time I see it.
I imagine this probably happens all over the world. Imagine standing in front of the Vatican or the Great Pyramids at Giza and completely ignoring the giant man-made marvel in front of you to take a photo of a squirrel that stops to scratch it's nuts. It only furthers the idea that we need to take time everyday to look at the amazing things that happen in our daily lives, rather than waiting until you've spent massive amounts of money traveling someplace to notice these thing.
